Porous Concrete May Be the Answer to Urban Flooding, Slick Surfaces

October 4, 2015 by Safer Walkways Staff Leave a Comment

A porous concrete called Topmix Permeable may be the answer to reducing flash flooding in urban areas, as well as significantly reduce the amount of standing water on sidewalks, parking lots, bike paths, roads and more in rainy weather. Created by Tarmac, the porous concrete surface can absorb up to 880 gallons of water.

The way the concrete surface works is that a layer of rocks and pebbles is set down, then the porous material is set on top. When rainwater hits the surface, it flows down through millions of tiny cracks to the rocky layer. From there, the water is absorbed back into the ground. Tarmac has produced a dramatic video demonstration that can be seen here.

The idea of porous concrete is not new, but those in the flooring industry and who work in professions where slip and fall accidents are a concern may see greater applications for this useful product. While the Topmix Permeable is not designed for use in colder climates, it definitely could become a popular addition to more temperate urban areas. It’s possible that this porous concrete or some similar concept becomes something that factories and other workplaces might utilize in order to reduce the likelihood of slip and fall accidents due to liquids pooling on a solid surface.
